September 12, 2019 3:11 pm

If you’re planning to spend your next holiday on Ibiza, you should also think about the possibility of a day trip to Formentera. It takes just 30 minutes to reach this idyllic island from Ibiza, and you’ll find a host of beaches and marvellous places to visit once you’re there.

First things first: how do I get to Formentera from Ibiza?

Just opposite the Torre del Mar hotel, on the Playa d’en Bossa beach, there’s a dock where various ferries depart for Formentera every day. The crossing usually takes half an hour. There are also ferries that depart from the ports of Ibiza and Santa Eulalia del Río.

Once there, how do I get around Formentera?

Formentera is a very small island, with an area of just 83 square kilometres. You can get around Formentera by hiring a car, a motorbike, a bicycle or a quad, and of course there’s also the option of exploring the coast by boat. The mode of transport you choose will depend to a large extent on the area you want to visit. If you want to tour Formentera from one end to the other, in other words from the Barbaria lighthouse to the Mola lighthouse, the best option would be to hire a car or motorbike. If you’re planning to enjoy a day of beaches and relaxation, one possibility would be to hire a bicycle and head to the famous Ses Illetes beach. Lastly, if you prefer to explore Formentera from the sea, your best bet will undoubtedly involve hiring a launch, a sailing dinghy or a yacht.

What are the best places to visit on Formentera?

If you’re mad about beaches, you’ll love Formentera. On your first visit to the island, be sure not to miss Illetes beach, the charming Saona cove and the beaches of Levante, Migjorn and Es Arenals. If you’ve visited Formentera before, we recommend that you sample more hidden-away places, such as Es Caló de Sant Agustí and Es Caló des Morts.

But Formentera is much more than beaches. Don’t miss the stunning views to be had from the cliffs by the Mola lighthouse (the highest point of the island), and at dusk head towards the Barbaria lighthouse to contemplate the most extraordinary sunset on Formentera.

Lastly, spare some time to visit some of the small settlements on the island, such as Sant Francesc Xavier, Sant Ferran de Ses Roques and La Mola (don’t miss the hippy market held every Sunday).
